Good supplements aren't just about what goes in; they're also about what doesn't need to be there.
By Jane Hodgson, Founder of INNOPURE
When I started INNOPURE, I wanted to question something that often gets overlooked in supplements: not just which ingredients we include, but whether every ingredient actually needs to be there.
That thinking has shaped how we develop our products. Today, we call it our Pure-Fill Philosophy.
It's a simple principle: every ingredient should have a purpose. From the nutrients we choose to the size of our capsules and the packaging they come in, we look for ways to keep things straightforward, avoid what's unnecessary and make thoughtful decisions at every stage.
What exactly is Pure-Fill?
Simply put, Pure-Fill means keeping the contents of a capsule as straightforward as possible, focusing on the active ingredients rather than unnecessary fillers, binders or additives.
When you look at a supplement label, you might find more than just the vitamins, minerals or botanicals you expected.
Some supplements contain fillers, binders and flow agents to help with manufacturing. These ingredients can serve practical purposes, but they're not always necessary.
At INNOPURE, we take a considered approach. We aim to avoid unnecessary ingredients and include only what each formulation genuinely needs.
It's not about adding less for the sake of it. It's about making every ingredient count.
It's not about adding less for the sake of it. It's about making every ingredient count.
Why do some supplements need a carrier?
Not every vitamin or mineral is needed in large quantities. Some nutrients are measured in micrograms - incredibly small amounts that need to be distributed evenly throughout a formulation.
In these cases, a carrier can play an important role. It helps distribute the active ingredient consistently, supporting accurate dosing from capsule to capsule.
That's different from adding an ingredient simply to bulk out a formulation without a specific purpose.
For some of our supplements, we use apple fibre as a carrier. It's a plant-derived ingredient that serves a specific purpose within the formulation.
Not every INNOPURE supplement needs a carrier, and not every product contains apple fibre. We make those decisions individually, based on what each formulation requires.
For us, Pure-Fill isn't about making absolute promises. It's about making considered choices.
Small capsules. A big difference.
One of the benefits of avoiding unnecessary bulking ingredients is that we can sometimes keep our capsules smaller. And that's something we take seriously.
We know that swallowing large capsules isn't everyone's favourite part of taking supplements. Where the formulation allows, a more compact capsule can make daily supplementation easier and more comfortable.
Across several INNOPURE product lines, our approach has helped us achieve smaller capsule sizes while delivering the intended nutrient content.
Of course, capsule size also depends on the ingredients and dosage required. We won't make a capsule smaller at the expense of a well-considered formulation.
Smaller capsules can mean smaller bottles, too
Thoughtful formulation doesn't stop at the capsule. For several of our products, using smaller capsules has also allowed us to choose more compact bottles. That means we're considering packaging efficiency alongside formulation quality.
As a Certified B Corporation, we're committed to considering how our business decisions affect people and the planet. Making responsible choices isn't always about one dramatic change. Sometimes it's about a series of smaller decisions: questioning unnecessary ingredients, considering capsule dimensions and choosing packaging that fits the product.
Where we can use a smaller bottle without compromising product protection or quality, that's a choice worth making.
Transparency matters more than perfection
We don't believe every additional ingredient is bad, or that every supplement can be made in exactly the same way. Different nutrients have different formulation requirements. Sometimes a carrier or another functional ingredient is necessary to create a consistent, practical product.
What matters is understanding why it's there.
That's why our Pure-Fill Philosophy isn't a rigid manufacturing rule. It's a set of principles that guides our decisions.
We aim to keep formulations straightforward, avoid ingredients that don't serve a necessary purpose and be transparent about what goes into our supplements.
A little less unnecessary. A lot more thought.
Our Pure-Fill Philosophy brings together the things we care about: purposeful ingredients, practical everyday supplements and thoughtful packaging choices.
It's about asking better questions at every stage of product development.
Does this ingredient need to be here? Could the capsule be smaller? Could the packaging be more compact? Is there a simpler way to achieve the same formulation goal?
Because sometimes, what you choose to leave out matters just as much as what you put in.
