Sea Moss and Bladderwrack Smoothie Recipe

By the power of seaweed, this delicious banana and avocado smoothie with added sea moss and bladderwrack is a great way to get a whole load of nutrients into your body especially if you are following a meat-free diet.  Vitamins and minerals are a great way to complement your diet and live a healthier lifestyle.

The Benefits

When combining Sea Moss and Bladderwrack this smoothie hits the right spot. Both are rich in iodine which the body needs to help with thyroid function. This important gland helps to control your metabolism, by releasing hormones that help growth, energy, reproduction, and repair.  The repair comes in the form of helping with your regeneration and strengthening of your immune system with its Potassium Chloride. This in turn is helping reduce weight for a healthier lifestyle to deter heart disease with clearer arteries, and giving your heart muscle less strain. The combination is also a good probiotic supplement, as it is also good for your gut health. All around, this smoothie is a healthy treat.

Both are high sources of fibre, which is well known as a prebiotic food to good bacteria, commonly known as probiotics in the gut. These beneficial bacteria help shape our health via the production of short-chain fatty acids.

Bladderwrack is considered to be great for the skin because it contains antioxidants that help prevent the damaging effects of free radicals and oxidative stress. Some studies even suggest that sea moss may be helpful in preventing the breakdown of collagen which is needed to keep the skin firm and tight.

The Recipe

Sea moss is a great source of iron; it actually contains more than 9 times the amount found in animal products. Added to that sea moss contains 6g of protein per 100g this is a high level considering it's plant-based, perfect for those following a plant-based meat-free diet.

For good measure, we have also added wonderful avocado, which not only adds texture and taste it also contains high levels of nutrients and minerals including iron, potassium, and copper. Although the calorie content of avocado is higher than some other vegetables and fruits, it's thought that because of its fat and fibre content avocado may help lead to the feeling of satiety to help manage and regulate your appetite.

And a favourite of ours in smoothies is the banana.  The banana’s smooth but firm texture is perfect for creating a perfect consistency. But it also has many other benefits, including a high fibre content which supports the feeling of fullness, acts as a prebiotic, a sustained boost of energy, and as bananas contain the amino acid tryptophan which is converted into serotonin to may also improve mood, lessen anxiety and provide a general good feeling.
